The Introductions

This is the first sentence of my book.  There had to be a first sentence, didn't there?  Good.  It's done.

Now, let me introduce myself...my name is Andrew.  Not Andy and certainly not White Boy, although I am called both at school.  I go to Meadowbrook Middle School in Ft. Worth, Texas. It's the home of the Buffalos, and I think it's because the students stomp their feet and snort and snarl.

We moved to Texas from Ohio last summer.  We moved in the hottest month of the year and we all nearly DIED of heat exhaustion as soon as we pulled into the city limits.  Mom didn't let me pass out. Instead, she made me carry in boxes.

The neighbor kids came out almost immediately.  At first I thought they wanted to introduce themselves and welcome us to the neighborhood.  Looking back, I think they just wanted to see what kind of stuff we had.  Either way, it was fine.  We quickly became friends.  They aren't exactly my age, but it was nice to hang out with people who didn't look like buffalos.

We live in an older neighborhood.  The houses aren't old, just the people.  And I mean OLD.  My mom is the youngest one on our block and she's 42.  That's old.  I don't know how old the other moms are.

Once we got everything unloaded, we started noticing our surroundings.  We live in a cul-de-sac off of a pretty busy street.  Across that street are some apartments.  That's where some of my friends live, but Dad won't let me go over there.  They seem a bit creepy.  Not scary, but some rough people live over there.  We've had to call the police a couple of times because we hear fighting and suspect drug sales are going on.  My friends have nothing to do with that.  They're cool.

Let me introduce my friends...the first one to come over was Butter.  His name is really Christopher, but when he was born, his skin was the color of peanut butter so they soon started calling him butter.  (That's good, because there is another Christopher in the neighborhood.)  Butter is a wild child.  Nothing scares or phases him.  He plays in the street and does other dangerous stuff.

Butter's brother (say THAT three times really fast!) is Kobe.  He likes to draw and act like he is much older than he really is.  He is the instigator of the group.  Butter and Kobe live in the house right across the street from us.

Christopher and Deryus are brothers.  Christopher is in my grade and Deryus is two years younger.  Both are very cool.

There are also a lot of girls.  They are annoying and that is all I will say about them right now.
